Orange Show Speedway racers hosting Halloween
event for children of families displaced by wildfires
SAN BERNARDINO (Oct. 26, 2007)
– There won’t be any racing at Orange Show Speedway on Saturday,
Oct. 27, but there will be race cars and drivers and crew members, all
of them coming together to host a Halloween “Trick-or-Treat”
celebration for the children of families displaced by the wildfires.
The festivities will begin at 4 p.m. in the main
parking lot of the National Orange Show Events Center and will continue
until at least 6 p.m. The main parking area is adjacent to the Events
Center administration building and may be accessed at Gate 1, just north
of the speedway on E Street.
The Events Center , of which the speedway is a part,
was declared an emergency evacuation center earlier this week. Since
then, over 4,000 people, many of them children, have registered and
been housed at the facility. There are no indications when those evacuated
from the San Bernardino Mountains will be able to leave the Events Center
, so NOS management and speedway officials combined to arrange the Halloween
celebration for the children.
The popular Big Foot monster truck will be on display
through the generosity of sponsor Firestone. Del Taco and KCAL television,
Channel 9, will be among the businesses participating. Major donations
of candy and other treats have been received from City Towing of San
Bernardino, one of the speedway’s official towing services, and
Rod Proctor’s Little Green Onions restaurant in Riverside , and
other businesses and individuals have indicated they will be donating
costumes, candy and other goods.
Individual donations will be welcomed and should
be dropped off at the Orange Show Speedway/Blackhawk Protection office
in the main parking area.
Numerous Orange Show Speedway racers and their families
have indicated they will bring their race cars to display and distribute
candy and other items. They are expected to be joined by racers from
Perris Auto Speedway, which on Friday cancelled its weekend program,
and Irwindale Speedway, which has concluded its regular season.
Gate 1 will open at 3 p.m. so those bringing race
cars to display may unload and prepare. Those who are bringing race
cars or anyone interested in volunteering their assistance are asked
to call the speedway office, 909-888-6788, X438, so that space adequate
to accommodate everyone may be set aside.
Speedway officials did explore the possibility of
staging a night of racing, which many expressed an interest in doing,
but that was not possible due to the logistical demands of the evacuation
center and American Red Cross guidelines for such facilities.
The Oct. 27 racing program, which was to have included
the Toys for Tots 100 Late Model race, will be rescheduled as quickly
as possible.
Racing at Orange Show Speedway is sponsored by Lucas
Oil, Blackhawk Protection, Hype Manufacturing, Del Taco, Aflac Insurance,
KTTD radio (AM 1350), Leno’s Rico Taco, Soboba Casino, Budweiser,
Hoosier Racing Tires, Frank’s Radio Service, Torco Racing Fuels,
Parker Pumper/BSR West, Eibach Springs, JP Striping, Star Auto Parts,
