Manke claims second Super Late Model championship;
Conklin, Secord also win Orange Show Speedway titles
SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 3, 2007) –
Travis Stockman got the main event win and John Manke took the Hype
Manufacturing Super Late Model championship Saturday night at Orange
Show Speedway.
Stockman, of Highland , started his Chevrolet Monte
Carlo on the pole for the 50-lap race and easily stayed in front all
the way while a possible three-way fight for the title failed to materialize.
Manke, who started alongside Stockman on the front
row, went into the event leading Rick Chavez by 6 points and Frankie
Gould by 8 and needed to finish just in front or close behind those
two to claim his second title in three years.
Eight laps in, it was down to two men when Murrieta’s
Chavez slowed and pulled off the quarter-mile oval with a broken timing
chain in his Chevrolet-powered Ford. So Manke, of Ramona, offered only
token resistance when fast qualifier Barry Karr took second on lap 19
and Gould passed him for third four laps later.
They ran that way to the finish, with Manke’s
Litehouse Chevrolet just inches behind Gould’s Chevrolet when
the checkered flag was waved. Manke, who had won the 2005 championship
by 2 points, took this one by 6 points, with Gould finishing second
and Chavez third in the standings.
Cliff Conklin also had an easier time than expected
while claiming his first Street Stock championship. The Big Bear paint
store owner went into the last of the division’s nine races leading
John Reiman by 8 points and Bobby Dezarov by 14 and wound up winning
by 22 points over Reiman, of Rosamond, and 26 over Dezarov, of Palm
Desert..
Conklin, whose brother, Jim, is the BSR West Late
Model champion, ran third behind winner Jesse Cottrell and runner-up
Kyle Meyer from start to finish of the 30-lap race. Dezarov and Reiman
never got into contention, Dezarov finishing ninth and Reiman 10th after
a brush with the wall.
Eddie Secord of Oak Hills put the finishing touch
on his ASA Pro 4 championship by winning a crash-filled 20-lap main
event. It was the 10th win in 14 races for Secord, who won the title
simply by taking the green flag.
Irvine ’s Tony Dumont won the final main event
for the Aflac Factory Four division over San Bernardino ’s Spencer
Samaro, who already had clinched his second title in three years. And
Dean Caskey, of Grand Terrace, won the 20-lap Mini StocKar main, but
relinguished his title to Mike O’Hara, of Canyon Country, who
finished second and took the championship by 2 points. Those two ran
1-2 in all seven races with O’Hara winning four of them.
Super Late Model driver C.J. Evans and Factory Fours
drivers Brandon Huizenga and Andrew Reed were fined $50 apiece for speeding
in the pits during their races and Reiman was assessed a $25 fine for
failing to undergo a pre-race technical inspection.
Orange Show Speedway will be dark next weekend, then
close its regular season Nov. 17 with the Toys for Tots 100, an open
competition race for Late Model stocks, and the final points races for
the Lucas Oil Outlaw Figure 8s, ASA Stock Ponys and Leno’s Rico
Taco Legends Cars.
