Phoenix Modified driver wins marathon Main event at Orange Show Speedway

SAN BERNARDINO (Aug. 5, 2007) – Billy Johanneck overcame 21 other starters and 14 caution flags to win a marathon Lucas Oil ASA Modified Series main event Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.

Johanneck’s victory in a 75-lap race that took well over an hour to run made it three different winners in the three races the traveling series has run on the quarter-mile oval at the National Orange Show Events Center . Dean Kuhn won the first race June 9 and Danny Gay took the second July 21.

Johanneck, who had finished third and fourth in the two previous races here, started on the outside of the front row and inherited the lead when John Tyczki was forced to leave the track with a flat tire after spinning in oil dropped on the track when Joe Bubbico’s engine blew on lap 12.

That mishap brought out the fifth yellow caution flag of the night. There would be nine more, all while Johanneck was leading and being dogged by points leader Gay. But with the caution flags disrupting any semblance of rhythm in the race (32 laps was the longest green flag stretch) Johanneck was able to withstand all of Gay’s challenges and win by about two car lengths.

Earlier, Ramona’s John Manke got his second win in three races by capturing the 50-lap Hype Manufacturing Super Late Models main event with the night’s third wire-to-wire performance.

Manke, the 2005 class champion, started his Litehouse Dressings Chevrolet on the outside of the front row in the 16-car field, but outdueled pole-sitter and defending champion Glen Cummings for the lead exiting Turn 4 on the opening lap and never was headed after that.

Fast qualifier Linny White, of Fontana , did his best to foil Manke. White pulled to the inside of the leader coming off Turn 4 with two laps to go, but had to slow momentarily to regain control after the two bumped in Turn 1 and couldn’t make another attempt to pass.

The ASA Pro 4, Aflac Factory Fours and Stock Cars USA main events played out in identical fashion, with the pole-sitter leading all the way and winning comfortably.

Eddie Secord did it in the 30-lap Pro 4 feature, winning a first-lap duel with points leader Rex Lockwood, then slowly pulling away to claim his seventh win in nine races. That came just after Martin Huizenga drove his Nissan pickup to an easy win in the Factory Fours 30-lap main. Then Peter Bryk of Yucaipa capped the evening by keeping his Chevrolet in front from the start to the finish of the 25-lap main for the Stock Cars USA class.

It was the first main event win for Huizenga, 46, a contractor from Hemet , and for Bryk.
