Teenager captures first Speed Truck win
at Orange Show Speedway
SAN BERNARDINO (March 17) –
Randel King, a 14-year-old from Riverside , got his first ASA Speed
Truck Challenge win Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
King, driving the Hype Manufacturing Chevrolet for
Clay Andrews Racing, led all but one of the 100 laps around the quarter-mile
paved oval and never faltered despite constant pressure from defending
series champion Darren Young of Gilbert , Ariz.
Young finished second, just ahead of teammate Bear
Rzesnowiecky, of Las Vegas . The running order of the top six finishers
never changed over the final 96 laps, but they seldom were separated
by more than a couple of seconds in an event slowed repeatedly by yellow
caution flags.
Defending Stock Pony champion Jim Mardis demonstrated
again that it’s not how long you lead that matters, it’s
when. Mardis led only the final two feet of the 25-lap main, barely
managing to get the nose of his Ford Pinto ahead of the Pinto of race-long
leader Richard Boker of Phelan.
The running order of that race changed dramatically
over the last three laps, after a crash eliminated Adrianne Murlin,
Joe Perez Jr. and Roberto Calvera. Jim Edmiston, the 2005 champion,
was second at the time and finished fourth, behind Mardis, Boker and
Matt Goodwin.
Jim Conklin of Big Bear, the defending Late Model
champion, pulled away over the second half of that 35-lap main event
to be an easy winner over 14-year-old Jimmy Rouse Jr. of San Bernardino
and Anthony Mainella of Palmdale.
Tom Smith of Lakewood made it two-for-two in the
35-lap Outlaw Figure 8 main by finishing more than half a lap ahead
of Billy Ziemann of Bloomington , who only finished his car earlier
Saturday. They were the only two of the eight starters on the lead lap.
The opening main event of the night, a 15-lap affair
for the Mini StocKars, went to Mike O’Hara of Canyon Country,
over Dean Caskey of Grand Terrace and Patti Caskey, also of Grand Terrace.
Orange Show Speedway will be idle next weekend. Racing
resumes March 31, with the Hype Manufacturing Super Late Models topping
the program.
