Tire ‘blows’ Conklin’s chance at first win

San Bernardino (May 12, 2008) – They say you only have to lead one lap to win the race, as long as it’s the last one.  That’s just what happened Saturday night as the Lucas Oil Late Models ran their 50 lap main event at OSS.  After leading 48 laps, Jim Conklin, the ’06 & ’07 OSS Late Model champion, suffered a blown tire after making contact with Mike Rinehart.  Austin Murphy, who won the divisions opening race, was putting pressure on Conklin for most of the race and was also knocked out just prior to that contact after suffering a mechanical failure.  On the restart at lap 48, Grand Terrace native Brian Malone had the lead and only had to hold it for two laps to bring his Palm Canyon Contractors sponsored Monte Carlo to its first checkered flag of the 2008 season.

Darren Amidon took his second checkered flag at OSS in the Leno’s Rico Taco Legends division for 2008.  Jimmy Hanson of Cedar Lakes Indiana, who had a win and a 2nd place showing on opening night, chalked up another second place finish.  A crash into the water barrels in turn 2 took 2007 OSS Legends Rookie of the Year Brent Scheidemantle out of the race and an earlier incident during the heat race sent Don Teller and Jim Pantier back to the pits and out of the main event.

David Timewell had no problems taking the checkered flag as the West Coast Pro Trucks ran their first of two events at OSS.  Timewell led every lap as Ronnie Davis Jr., Dalton Kuhn and Jeff Williams fought it out for second place.

2006 Stock Pony Champion Jimmy Mardis claimed victory in his first race in the Stock Pony class in 2008.  Mardis worked his way through Matt Goodwin, Jim Edmiston, and Ryan Bragdon to take the lead on lap 19.  Rookie driver Robby Hornsby claimed his second consecutive top five finish.
